The First film was received by mixed testimonials from critics. Roger Ebert termed it "nearly as good for a James Bond movie". Adam Smith of Empire On-line called the movie, "Sporadically entertaining, but severely hampered by a really choppy screenplay", and score it a few out of 5 stars.
